If you’re pregnant on the Westside, you’ve probably already heard it:
“Are you going UCLA or St. John’s?”
That’s it. Those are the two options. (Not officially… but like… unofficially.)
tbh, we are ridiculously lucky. Both UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center / Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and Providence Saint John's Health Center are world class. Like… top tier, people-fly-here-for-this level care.
If this is your first baby, it can feel like this decision carries a lot of weight. It does. But also, you’re choosing between two of the best places in the country to do this. So this isn’t a “which is better” situation. It’s more like: Which flavor of excellent do you want?
Let’s break it down like the SaaS comparison chart you didn’t know you needed.
UCLA: “We’ve seen everything. You’re in very good hands.”
UCLA is the friend who is calm in a crisis, knows every scenario, and has a backup plan for the backup plan.
What people love:
Access to midwives (huge for lower-intervention births)
One of the best NICUs in the country (Westwood especially)
Feels extremely safe and well-coordinated
Strong if you’re high-risk or just want that extra reassurance
Santa Monica vs. Westwood
Santa Monica = easier parking, more relaxed, still excellent care
Westwood (Ronald Reagan) = where the serious cases go (and where the highest-level NICU is)
Translation: If anything unexpected happens, you’re already in the system that handles it best.
The vibe check:
Less “spa-like,” more “you are at one of the best medical institutions in the world”
People on Reddit/forums often say: “Not fancy, but I felt completely taken care of.”

St. John’s: “Let’s make this feel… nice.”
St. John’s is where people say things like: “Wait… this is a hospital?”
What people love:
Bigger, more comfortable rooms
Option to upgrade to specialty suites
Better food (this comes up… a lot)
Strong reputation for attentive nursing care
OB-led experience that feels more personalized
And yes…Beyoncé had her twins here (which somehow still gets mentioned in every mom thread)
The vibe check:
More boutique hotel meets hospital
People often say: “It felt calmer, quieter, more private”
Let’s talk costs (aka: depends, but here’s the ballpark)
Short answer: Insurance matters more than hospital choice.
Without insurance (rough estimates):
Vaginal delivery: $15K–$25K+
C-section: $25K–$50K+

Both hospitals:
Accept most major insurance plans (Aetna, Blue Shield, Anthem, etc.)
Offer billing estimates if you call ahead
Have wildly variable out-of-pocket costs depending on your plan
Venice Rising tip: Call BOTH billing departments with your insurance and ask for:
“Global maternity estimate”
“Hospital + OB combined estimate”
You’ll get a much clearer picture.
TL;DR comparison
| Feature | UCLA (Santa Monica / Westwood) | St. John’s |
|---|---|---|
| Overall vibe | Clinical excellence, research-driven | Boutique hotel energy |
| NICU level | Top-tier (especially Westwood) | Strong, but UCLA wins here |
| Midwives | Yes (big draw) | OB-led |
| Rooms | Comfortable, modern | Larger, more luxe, upgrade options |
| Food (yes, this matters) | Fine | Famously better 👀 |
| Holistic options | More integrated (midwives, lower-intervention pathways) | More traditional but flexible |
| Celebrity factor | Low-key | Beyoncé had her twins here 💅 |
| Best for | Safety-first, lower intervention, academic care | Experience, comfort, OB relationships |
Holistic / crunchy considerations
UCLA leans more toward:
Midwives (a big draw for a lot of Westside moms)
Lower-intervention pathways
Flexibility in birth plans (movement, positioning, etc.)
A more “your body, your pace” approach within a hospital setting
St. John’s:
More traditional OB-led model
Still flexible, but less “built-in” holistic structure
Natural birthing suite available - designed to feel more home-like, with a supportive team and space for a lower-intervention experience
Translation:
You can absolutely have a more natural / low-intervention birth at either hospital, UCLA just bakes it into the system more, while St. John’s offers it as more of a dedicated experience within a traditional model.
Placenta / TCM note
Both hospitals typically allow:
Placenta release (with forms)
Delayed cord clamping (on request)
Always confirm ahead of time (policies can shift slightly). Make sure you bring a cooler to transport your placenta to your practitioner.

Local “hacks” parents talk about
From forums, group chats, and whispered at playgrounds:
TOUR BOTH! The vibe matters more than you think
If going UCLA:
Some prefer Santa Monica for experience, Westwood for peace of mind
If going St. John’s:
Ask about room upgrades early (they can book up)
Choose your OB first, hospital second
How long are you there?
Vaginal birth: ~1–2 days
C-section: ~3–4 days
St. John’s may feel shorter because… nicer rooms 😅
Final take (Venice parent edition)
Want maximum peace of mind / NICU backup / midwives → UCLA
Want comfort, vibe, and a slightly more “luxury” experience → St. John’s
Both are within about 10–20 minutes of Venice (traffic… TBD), which means you’re not dealing with long distance stress when it actually matters.
Either way?
You’re having a baby in Santa Monica, not in a medical desert somewhere.
And that’s kind of amazing.
If you’ve delivered at either, we’d LOVE to hear your take (especially the unfiltered version 👀)
