Your weekly “wait, that’s happening?” digest

How's everyone surviving spring break? Whether you're on day two of "I'm bored" or you've spent copious amounts of money on a camp, solidarity.

If you're one of the brave souls trying to work from home while your kids are off, we put together our official Beach Office guide: how to answer emails from the venice pier parking lot while your kids haul buckets of seawater back and forth until they pass out. Laptop, hotspot, sand as childcare. It works better than it should.

Also, grunion season is here! The first April runs start this week: Wednesday through Saturday night (April 1–4), roughly 10pm–1am. Thousands of tiny silver fish riding the waves onto the sand to spawn. It's wild, it's wiggly, and it's one of those only in socal things your kids will never forget. April is closed season, so it's observation only (no touching!) but watching is the best part. Grab a flashlight, dress in layers, and head to the beach after dark. Screens in schools update

A quick update on the Schools Beyond Screens campaign (the parent / teacher coalition pushing for more intentional technology use in LAUSD classrooms).

LAUSD board members Nick Melvoin, Tanya Ortiz Franklin, and Karla Griego have introduced a resolution that would require the district to develop a formal screen time policy, and weigh prohibiting one to one devices for students up to second grade. If passed, the new policy could be implemented as soon as next school year.

This comes as at least 16 states have introduced legislation to reevaluate classroom screen time in 2026, and four states are considering outright bans on individual devices in elementary schools.

Our deep dive on this is still one of the most read things we've published:
